Fake Skating, Lynn Painter

“I wish I didn’t know that her lip gloss tasted like cherries, suddenly I’ve got a killer sweet tooth”

Dear diary,

This book had me giggling at 2am, when I was supposed to be long asleep. It’s the childhood friends to enemies to fake dating to lovers hockey romance trope, and honestly I couldn’t have asked for anything more.

Dani and Alec were inseparable as kids- whether it was sneaking into movie theatres, or playdates on the playground, they did everything together- they were also each others first kiss. Until Dani moved away. Years later, she’s back to Minnesota and full of wonder of how reconnecting with nerdy Alec would be like. But hes nothing like she remembers. He’s the hockey god in a town where hockey rules.

They might be strangers now- with unasked questions and feelings hovering over each of them- but one thing leads to another and Dani and Alec find themselves playing the role of boyfriend and girlfriend, and “complicated” becomes an understatement.

I loved both Dani and Alec. Dani with her anxiety, and her tendency to overthink and over-prepare hit close to home, so how could I not. It made her relatable and even more loveable. I loved Alec, specially his soft side. Regardless of his numerous struggles, he always showed up for his people, specially Dani. I loved the way he loved her. The two of them were perfect for each other and seeing them reconnect was heartwarming. I also loved the cosy town, its energy, the friend group and how even though hockey was a big part, it wasn’t made the focus.

Overall this book was the perfect cosy, clean, heartwarming read- and Alec was just so hot hahaha
