Moon Pie, Simon Mason

“You don’t stop loving someone just because they’re not there anymore”

Dear diary,

Reading this book as a twelve year old really hit hard. This isn’t just a story about a girl and her family—it’s about growing up too fast, holding things together when everything’s falling apart, and learning when to ask for help.

Moon Pie follows the story of eleven-year-old Martha, a bright and responsible girl who takes on the overwhelming task of looking after her younger brother, Tug, after their mother dies and their father begins to struggle with alcohol. As her father’s behavior becomes more unpredictable, Martha tries to keep the family together without letting anyone know what’s really going on at home.

Despite the challenges, the story is filled with warmth, humor, and hope. Through her courage, imagination, and love for her brother, Martha learns that asking for help isn’t a weakness—and that even when things fall apart, support can come from unexpected places and people.

It’s a heartfelt realistic novel that explores the themes of family, responsibility, grief and resilience, all from a child’s perspective.
