“You were such an angry little thing. A real termagant. Did I ever tell you how much I liked that?
Dear diary,
All book obsessed people love books about books, and that is what drew me to this book the most. Its an enemies to lovers love story, with two polar opposite characters- Kate full of sunshine and colour, and Sebastian grumpy and emotionally constipated.
Kate, a successful bookseller, decides to open a book shop, that celebrates the kind of genre she loves to read- popular non-fiction- in a town her mom left and swore to never return to. However she’s surprised to find that not everyone in the town is as excited as she is. Least of all? Sebastian, the owner of the highbrow bookstore across the street. He has rules for everything: the kind of books he sells, the clothes he wears, what he’s allowed to feel and the people he can date(no one local)
When Sebastian grudgingly agrees to let her in on the towns literary festival, they find themselves working closely together. Their growing attraction( “hatred”) becomes harder and harder to overlook. One uncalled for heated moment can’t mean anything, can it?
This book had a great premise and a promising start, but it felt a bit flat for me. Sebastian was unnecessarily whiny and pompous and Kate was a bit of a mess. The connection between both of them was rushed and felt more like lust rather than love. The story itself, specially (*SPOILER ALERT*) the part about the generational love letters was good. The concept of the book, two rival booksellers( each with their own history) falling for each other while working on a literary festival is of course so dreamy, but I just thought the characters lacked real chemistry.
