The Naturals, Jennifer Lynn Barnes

” To catch a serial killer, you have to think like one”

Dear diary,

This book had me so hooked I stayed up past midnight to finish it (and I am a person who sleeps really early). It was an extremely gripping book that got me so absorbed I finished it within a day.

Cassie is a natural at reading people; she can piece together the tiniest details just by looking at them. She never really gave much importance to it until she was approached by the FBI to join a classified program that uses exceptional teenagers with natural talent to help crack notorious cold cases.

Cassie is unaware that there is more to risk than a few unsolved killings. She’s sent to live with teens whose gifts are as unusual as her own. When a killer strikes, they have to work together as danger looms closer to home than ever. And no one in the Naturals program is easy to read, nor are they what they seem.

Cold cases soon get hot, and the killer seems to like playing games…

I love all the characters in this book- sarcastic, privileged Michael, who reads emotions. Salone, who’s a genius with numbers and has a coffee problem. Lia, a fashion icon, whos a human lie detector and Dean who like Cassie is a profiler but keeps Cassie at arms length. Each Natural, adds so much character and depth to the book, each of them with their own back stories and mostly tragic pasts.

If you’re someone into crime psychology, this book is definitely for you. Willingly or unwillingly you will understand how serial killers think and how repetition of small incidences can set off their switch and lead them on the path of becoming a serial killer.

Gory alert- this book has a lot of it. Some pages had me in disbelief of how psychotic a person could be.

Nonetheless, I absolutely loved this book. It was a much needed thriller in mundane life.
