“The large ballroom was crowded with familiar ghosts to help celebrate her birthday”
Dear diary,
This book was a bit too much for me. It was way too intense. I was almost about to stop midway, but it was the nerve-racking plot that made me want to continue.
Kate Blackwell is impenetrable. She inherits the business founded by her father, Jamie McGregor, who struck it rich as a diamond prospector. Her mother was the daughter of a crooked merchant. Kate got the best and worst of them both.
At the prodigal celebrations of her ninetieth birthday, there are numerous toasts and a letter from the White House, but for Kate there are ghosts. Ghosts of absent enemies, friends from a life of manipulation, frauds, blackmails, and murder. At certain parts of the book, I had to stop myself from screaming at Kate and wishing the absolute worst for her. How could someone be so psychotic and controlling? I wanted to rip the book into pieces because what I was reading seemed so absurd!
But the plot was extremely compelling and it felt like I wouldn’t be able to rest if I didn’t finish the book. If you’re someone who loves dark books about deceit, assault, blackmail, and an enigma of a woman, this one’s definitely for you.
